Why this book matters
Retirement is not only a financial event
Retirement is not an ending, but a continuation — an opportunity to serve others and find meaning in new ways.
Most retirement advice stops at the money. But the people who thrive in later life will tell you the same thing: the hardest questions aren’t about pensions — they’re about identity, rhythm and meaning.
When the structure of work falls away, so can a sense of who we are and why we matter. Purposeful Retirement takes those questions seriously, weaving together health, relationships, contribution and purpose alongside the financial planning.
The result is a book that treats your next chapter as something to be designed with intention — a life that stays vital, connected and quietly significant.
A roadmap to a purposeful retirement
The foundations of a purposeful retirement
Six themes drawn from the book. Each one builds on the last.
Rethinking retirement
Society hands you a script for retirement. This book helps you write your own.
Financial clarity
The pension system is flawed and we are living longer. Plan with clear eyes so money serves your life, not the other way around.
Proactive vitality
Health is not a given you protect: it is a practice you build. Make it a central pillar, not an afterthought.
Mental & emotional wellbeing
Retirement surfaces feelings most people are unprepared for. Navigate them with grace, courage, and renewed purpose.
Soul & purpose
What actually gives your life meaning? This book approaches that question with intellectual rigour and helps you plan from the inside out.
Habits & behaviours
Small daily rhythms, consistently kept, quietly compound into a structured and satisfying life.
Real people. Real stories.
Inspiration from lives well lived
The book is filled with people who reimagined later life on their own terms. Here are a few of their stories.

Kindness, courage & service
Floyd Steadman OBE
From Saracens captain to trailblazing headteacher and OBE, Floyd turned a hard start in life into a second career of compassion — and now delivers talks on equality across the country.

Service & lifelong learning
Ossie Fernando
A retired transplant surgeon who replaced the operating theatre with teaching, volunteering and travel. “Every day I want to learn something new — it keeps me alive and interested in the world.”

Reinvention after loss
John Marriott
He built and carefully sold a thriving business, then rebuilt his life after losing his wife — rediscovering purpose through community involvement and volunteering.

Mattering, usefulness & compassion
Vicky Keen
A story about the quiet power of feeling useful — and how showing up for others becomes a source of meaning in later life.

Community & walking cricket
Graham Smith
Proof that vitality and belonging don’t retire — Graham’s later life is built around community, activity and the joy of staying in the game.

Friendship, purpose & connection
Maff Potts
A life’s work centred on the simple, radical idea that friendship and purpose are what people need most — at every stage of life.

Safety, soul & slowing down
Bob Simmons
Five decades keeping others safe in the skies, then a reckoning with his own health, habits and happiness. Bob's story is about doing the inner work before the outer life changes.

Presence, purpose & the long game
Esther Morgan
At 23, Wales international Esther Morgan has already faced injury, reinvention and the existential questions most people postpone until their fifties. Her lesson: be fully present now, but know what matters.

Identity, recovery & the enforced gift
Dr Jo MacGowan
A cycling accident stripped Dr Jo MacGowan of her career, her routine and her sense of self. What she found in the pause changed how she thinks about everything that comes next.

Adventure, vitality & one life
Peter Hayes
Peter Hayes retired early, bought a campervan and never looked back. Skydiver, heli-biker, Slovenia chalet owner: his retirement is proof that purpose and play are not mutually exclusive.
What readers are saying
Early praise for Purposeful Retirement
Bimbi has managed in Purposeful Retirement to combine a practical account of what is involved in retirement with a deep understanding of the twists and turns of this phase of life plus the amazing ability to portray it as an exciting and rich period so long as those considering it are well prepared. His book provides a superb vista of what to expect, how to handle it and leaves the reader feeling excited at what is to come.
Purposeful Retirement is a vital disruption to the traditional retirement narrative, which often focuses only on financial planning. While I champion the fuel of financial independence, Bimbi masterfully reminds us that the true destination is a life of health, connection, and profound meaning. He is the perfect guide for this journey, blending his clinical wisdom as a surgeon with an authentic heart for service to others. This book is an essential roadmap for anyone ready to trade their career title for a lasting, purposeful legacy.
In Purposeful Retirement, Bimbi has collected a rich and eclectic set of insights and sources, adding his own personal views and some fascinating personal case studies to create an enjoyable, accessible and useful toolkit.

About the author
Bimbi Fernando
